Stress is one of the most dangerous things people encounter on a daily basis. It can affect our bodies in more ways than one. We’ve all known people who’ve had immense difficulty managing their own stress. And we’ve all been in situations where we needed to let out steam on a really bad day. Image source: stress.lovetoknow.com The harsh truth about stress relief is that often, the things that are most effective in relieving stress are unhealthy. Or so people think. How often have we seen people overeat, binge-drink, do drugs, or have unsafe sex, just to forget the stressors of their lives for a single night? And what people don’t realize until it’s too late is that all these unhealthy endeavors have consequences. However, with enough help and support from friends and relatives, those who are stressed out can replace these self-destructive habits with self-actualizing ones. It takes a bit of time to mentally condition a person who drinks pints of beer on a nightly basis to go to the gym and sweat all the stress out. It has been observed through many studies and by many researchers over the years that once the mental aspect of self-destructive stress-relief seeking is overcome, a person stays in the healthy environment as long as he can. And all he needs to not slide back into bad habits is a nudge from family and friends. Image source: bbc.com Hello. I’m Dr. Wayne Imber, a retired professor of social and developmental psychology.
